Sinossi | Abstract

The thesis investigates how the America film industry has successfully performed in the domestic and international film market, and how it progressively maintained and consolidated its leadership position. On this regard, the thesis reports the main theories proposed within the research domain of the political economy of cinema. Theories which contribute to explain the current configuration of the international film market. Afterwards the thesis offers two in-depth studies able to enrich this debate. The first one concerns some rules introduced in the Unites States at the beginning of the 70s in order to regulate the television market. Rules that de facto helped the American film industry to further grow thanks to a ‘forced’ and profitable collaboration with the television film industry. The second one, instead, investigates the Hollywood majors’ decision to focus their economic investments on few high-budget movies designed for the global market (the so-called blockbuster movies). Beyond their relevance for the debate about Hollywood success, these two in-depth studies highlight as well weaknesses of the European film industry(-ies): the late collaboration with the television industry, and the inability to produce high-budget movies designed for a trans-national audience.
