Sinossi | Abstract
A Touch of Spice, Eat Drink Man Woman, Like Water for Chocolate. Con le parole di Ang Lee: “In a film, you can’t smell or taste food. All you can do is see it. So how you see it becomes crucial. You’re using food to seduce the senses”.

The research starts with a general survey about the experience of taste that the cinematographic image turns in a visual experience, from a historical and cultural exploration not only of the ‘food film’, but a ‘culinary imagination’ that runs through the history of cinema. Using the tools of semiotic analysis of the story, but also through some other suggestions, Barthes, Lévi-Strauss, Greimas or Bachelard, the research also identifies a mythical and symbolic matrix inscribed in narratives and visual stratifications, in order to reach the analysis of six case studies: Felicia’s Journey, Fried Green Tomatoes, Big Night, A Touch of Spice, Eat Drink Man Woman, Like Water for Chocolate. The analysis is organized around three axes, remember, elsewhere, passions, to reach a functional exploration of the symbolic suggestion that connects story and image, and that opens up worlds of meaning, especially related to the ritualized system and identity status that myth and tradition give to the cinematographic image. With Ang Lee’s words:“In a film, you can’t smell or taste food. All you can do is see it. So how you see it becomes crucial. You’re using food to seduce the senses”.
