Sinossi | Abstract

My thesis proposes a broadening of the critical enquiry to the last period of Epstein’s thought and cinema, in a perspective founded on two aspects intertwined: on the one hand the re-reading of his theories and films, based on the idea of ‘photogeny’, from the well-known formulas of the 1920s up to the studies of the Forties and the Fifties, an idea that goes far beyond the lesson – yet important – of the avant-garde; on the other hand the acquisition of an unknown archival fund – the Fonds Epstein, preserved in the Bibliothèque du Film in Paris  documenting, with reading notes and sketches, the wide and multicolored range of the studies the director made in the last years of his life, witnessing his will of positioning his own theory on cinema in the territory of philosophical reflection.
