Sinossi | Abstract

The photomontage Le Phénomène de l’extase, realized from Dalì in 1933 for the double number 3-4 of ‘Minotaure’, embodies a perfect synthesis of some of the aesthetic reflections dear to the Surrealists, like the interest for criminology and the crime as demonstration of the phenomenon of the merveilleux, the concept of beauté convulsive and hysteria, the theme of eros and pornography. It also represents other emblematic themes: the relationship between surrealist avant-garde, photography, editing and cinema. My thesis, by introducing Dalì’s photomontage as a case study and analyzing each fragment composing it, shows how Surrealism has resorted to the new photographic mean – particularly through the editing of fixed or moving images – in order to expose the great influence it exerted on some photographic canons and type of documentary iconography, which have been developed since the end of XIX century in scientific, judicial and medical circles. In particular it explores how these have been incorporated in the movement’s aesthetical production, both in photography and cinema, and in terms of theoretical speculations.
