Sinossi | Abstract

Portraying sex and death, Sadian cinema – the films based on the life and the novels of D.-A.-F. De Sade – stares into the (Bazinian) abyss of obscenity. The analysis of this filmography produces a constellation in which every text is in dialogue with the other films, with the oeuvre of Sade as a whole, with the critical literature on Sade and, finally, with the “Sadian spaces” (the castle, the prison, the madhouse, the theater, the voyage) that host the echoes produced by the films. Sadian cinema assume thus the characteristic of a self-destroying message (Pier Paolo Pasolini’s Salò); of a (lost) challenge to the limits of the medium (Peter Brook’s Marat/Sade); of an attempt that has to recognize its failure (Jesús Franco’s Sadian films); of an ambition that cannot be truthful to its own intentions (Louis Skorecki’s Eugénie de Franval)… These are films that deal with unrepresentability, defy the tolerance of the viewer, question the power of looking on. Sade’s challenge produces consequences on film representation and – as many directors are well aware – on film theory.
